Firefox Plugins

May 15, 2007

Well I decided that I will share with everyone and at the same time document for myself the plug-ins that I use for Firefox and what they do.

AddBlock Plus – This plug-in is useful mostly on Linux version of Firefox for me as for the Windows end I use my firewall [Outpost Firewall] to block all associated add pages with the words in it. This plug-in is a wonderful thing for those people that do not have outpost firewall or use Linux.

Deepest Sender – a very nice plug-in that open’s up a window that you can blog from, and lets you do formating and posting for various blogs.  I am using it now in fact!  The only bad thing about it, which I have to submit to them and I have on my To Do List is no multiple categories.

Download Embedded – For that time that you really want to go grab the embedded graphic, movie, sound, etc., this is is the plug-in that gets it done.

Download Status bar – Simple bar that opens up downloaded boxes and the status of download instead of a separate download window.

IETab – For those times that you must use IE, there is no point in opening a separate window, this plug-in lets you open up pages inside Firefox Tab.

Tab Effect – Want some WOW factor? This plug-in just creates a rotating cube inside the browser. While not the same as XGL in Linux it is a nice little effect that runs in any Firefox environment. Now if only XGL ran on windows!

There are a few other plug-ins that I use from Google, but they take up their own posts later on!

RSS Reader for Windows (Feed Demon)

May 15, 2007

I have been playing with the Demo of a pretty good RSS Reader software.  For a while I have been using the Plug-ins for Firefox called SAGE, and while it does provide the information within the Browser, it does not give me some options such as instant pop-ups at the bottom of the screen, ability to actually read some of the things off-line while I am traveling on the bus, and some minor things.  So i decided to demo this software, which gives you a lot of options that I was looking for and so far I like it.

Some of the Features that I like:

  • Newspaper Format – Lets you display Groups in a newspaper format
  • News Bins – Ability to collect items you might want to read again in News Bins for future reference
  • Reading Articles in other readers such as Firefox
  • Watches – Looking for Keywords in the news items
  • Search Words by creating a dynamic Search Channel looking for keywords.
  • Podcasts – tools built in to the reader to view podcats including scheduling of downloads.
  • Plus many more!

I recommend you try it out for yourself with a demo available:
FeedDemon for Windows – Award Winning RSS Reader

GAIM is now PIDGIN (a great Instant Messanging Client)

May 9, 2007

The GAIM project after a long time of playing Pin the Tail on the Lawyer … I mean a court and Letter writing battle has decided to just let it go.

As of the 2.0.0 version the GAIM project and product is now called PIDGIN. What does it mean to you, nothing as far as the great software is concerned. Same product, new graphics and a new name. This is actually a nice move as far as I can see as this will stop the legal headaches and lets the developers concentrate on making the software even better.

If you are not familiar with GAIM or as it is now known PIDGIN, it is the best Instant Messaging client out there. It is relatively light for a client that has ability to communicate to the following networks: AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Groupwise, ICQ. IRC Client, MSN, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Lotus Sametime, XMPP (Google Talk), Yahoo!, Zephyr. It also has ability for great plug-ins to compliment the environment.

The 2.0.0 product is not far away from the 2.0 beta product of GAIM as far as I can see. There are some additions of protocols it now supports, and it will be available for the same platforms as before.

After uninstalling GAIM and installing Pidgin in windows there was very little set-up that needed to be done as Pidgin grabbed GAIM information. Also there are plenty of plug-ins available for pidgin same as for GAIM.

For Gentoo Systems pidgin is available through portage although is currently marked as experimental (~x86)
